Based in North Carolina, We The Wildlife is a conservation nonprofit committed to protecting endangered elephants and other vulnerable species and ecosystems in Africa - building a future where people and wildlife thrive together in thoughtful balance and harmony.
“We offer donors a unique opportunity to support measurable, high-visibility alignment with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) outcomes tied to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - advancing biodiversity, strengthening climate resilience through ecosystem restoration, and building inclusive partnerships that uplift local communities.”
- Tracey Holloway, Founder & Guardian of We The Wildlife
Elephants are often called the “mega gardeners of the forest” because they are extraordinary seed dispersers. As they roam vast distances, they carry the seeds of countless trees within them, depositing them across forests, savannas, and even degraded lands. In fact, some of the largest-seeded trees in West Africa can only be spread by elephants—no other animal is strong enough to transport them. Protecting elephants means preserving the future of the forests themselves. Without them, entire ecosystems slowly begin to collapse
In the 1970s, Ghana had a population of 20,000 to 30,000 elephants. Today, Ghana is home to fewer than 1,000 elephants, scattered across fragmented landscapes.
This isn’t a loss—it’s a call
Ghana’s elephants are still here, still roaming, still fighting to survive. And with your support, we can ensure they do more than survive—they can thrive again.
We the Wildlife is laying the foundation for its pilot sanctuary project in the lush Western Corridor of Ghana, West Africa—one of several high-priority regions in Africa where elephant populations face urgent threats from habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict. With the support of donor partners, we are securing 100+ acres of conservation land to protect migratory elephant routes and establish a sanctuary where orphaned and injured elephants receive expert care and are rewilded to join free-roaming herds.
Within the sanctuary, we are developing essential infrastructure to support elephant wellbeing and peaceful coexistence with nearby communities. This includes the construction of water basins for year-round access to clean water, as well as dedicated feeding zones planted with elephant-preferred crops and bordered by natural barriers to gently redirect elephants away from village lands. We collaborate with local Farmers’ Cooperative to cultivate native and beneficial crops while supporting the creation of value-added products to generate sustainable income for the Cooperative and contribute to the sanctuary’s long-term resilience.
This is not just a project—it’s a movement. And we invite you to be part of it.
